FAQs
-
All wood is purchased from reputable sources who follow responsible forest management, CITES, Lacey Act, etc.
-
Part of the selection process is functional; what characteristics of a species best serve the goal of the project. Another area of consideration is aesthetic; color, grain pattern, figuring, etc.
-
Customer provided materials will be considered on a case by case basis. The quality and quantity of materials must be assessed prior to accepting them for use.
-
As with selecting wood, selecting a finish is primarily based on the end function of the project. All pieces that are intended to be used with food have a food safe finish. Once a finish is cured, it is safe for all members of the family, including children and pets (unless they are chewing on it, but then, the wood splinters aren’t safe at that point either).
-
Pieces are designed to serve a purpose. Once the functional elements necessary for that purpose are identified, a design forms around it. After a rough design is formed, revisions are made as construction methods are considered. Designs are intended to be unique and aesthetically pleasing as well as functional. Each piece is approached as one would approach creating a piece of art.

You may present your own design for consideration. We will discuss the viability of your design and revisions it may need to make it buildable.

This process is fairly simple. Begin by filling out the consultation request form (button at the top of the page). We will set up a mutually agreeable time to discuss your hopes and dreams, as well as Blackthorn policies. Following this meeting I will begin working on your design (if necessary, we will meet to refine the design). We will discuss things like wood type, stains/finishes, etc. when you are presented with the design. Once you have signed off on the final design you will receive a quote for the project, after which production can begin. If you are in the local area (or not, in some rare cases), I will deliver and install the final product at your residence or business. The last step is for you to enjoy your unique wood piece for many years before passing it on to posterity.
-
Lead times (the time it takes to design and build a piece) vary with the size and complexity of the project, among other factors. Some pieces may take two months while others take ten months. A specific lead time will be discussed with you once your design has been completed and approved.
-
Specific payment procedures will vary depending on the piece and price, however 100% of material cost is required up front in order for Blackthorn to purchase the wood for your project.
-
Care is based on the finish that is used for each piece. A card containing specific care information will be included with your piece.

No. Blackthorn Woodworks is not a reproduction shop. If there are elements of a particular style that you like, we can discuss the incorporation of those elements into your project.
